About Capital Credit Union

The story so far...

June 1989

Capital Credit Union was initially registered as the Lothian Regional Council Employees Credit Union, to provide easily accessible savings and borrowing facilities to its staff.

1996

Following de-regionalisation of the old council structure, the credit union reinvented itself as Capital Credit Union and welcomed the addition of many new sponsoring employers. This increased the awareness and coverage of Capital Credit Union tremendously within the industrial community of Edinburgh and the Lothians.

2002

All UK credit unions became accountable to the Financial Services Authority.  In the same year, Capital Credit Union applied to have its common bond extended to include Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Scottish Borders.

Today

To date, Capital Credit Union:

  • has over 18,000 members
  • has over 40 sponsoring employers.
  • has an asset base of over £21m
  • is the 3rd largest Credit Union in Scotland
  • is the 5th largest Credit Union in the UK

Sponsoring employers include the Scottish Parliament, City of Edinburgh Council, West Lothian Council, East Lothian Council, Midlothian Council, Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade, and Lothian NHS. A number of community initiatives have also been initiated and partnerships are being forged to empower those from both financially and socially excluded areas.

'Not for profit, not for charity, but for service of all members'

Capital, is controlled by a Board of Directors elected from the membership, and is managed on a day-to-day basis by Chief Executive Marlene Shiels and a dedicated team of staff. It is arguably the most successful Credit Union in Britain today and has pioneered a number of tailor-made products unique to Credit Union members, as well as championing volunteer development.

Additionally, Capital Credit Union has more Development Educators than any other Credit Union in Britain and has been recognised by the movement as a model employer.
