MARLENE SHIELS ELECTED TO WOCCU BOARD
Marlene Shiels, Chief Executive of Capital Credit Union, Edinburgh has been elected to the Board of the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) who are the global apex body operating in 97 countries and serving 184 million members. Marlene, already a Director for the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd, is only the second British representative ever to sit on WOCCU's Board .
On behalf of the World Council Marlene recently attended her first official engagement at the House of Lords. In an attempt to help publicize the positive role credit unions play, particularly in light of the recent global economic crisis, the country’s first-ever National Credit Union Awards for Excellence program was launched. Marlene participated in the launch explaining the importance of the global credit union movement.
As Marlene explained to the assembled dignitaries “Every day, more than 49,000 credit unions worldwide provide products and services to their members, especially those demonstrating the greatest financial need.”
