Confirming your identity | Capital Credit Union
Confirming your identity

Most people are verified in minutes.

Like any bank or building society, we have to check who you are when you join. For most people this happens automatically the moment they apply, with nothing to send us.

Now and then the automatic check cannot quite confirm someone, and we need to see a document or two. If that is you, read on.

If we get in touch

Sometimes we need a closer look

The automatic check works for most people, but not everyone. It often cannot confirm you if you have moved recently, or if there is a small difference in how your details are written down somewhere. It does not mean anything is wrong, and it is quick to sort out.

When this happens, we send you a text message with a secure link to upload two documents. That is all it takes.

Look out for a text from us

The link comes by text and takes you to ID-Pal, the secure service we use to collect documents. It is the only link you need, and you upload everything through it. If a text seems to be from us but you are unsure, call us first on 0131 225 9901.

Document one

Photo identity

Something with your photograph that proves who you are, such as a passport or photo driving licence.

Document two

Proof of address

Something recent that shows where you live, such as a council tax or utility bill.

What we accept

Choose one from each list

Documents must be current, and anything with a date must be within the time shown. The same document cannot cover both, so if your driving licence is your photo identity, you will need something else for your address.

Joining someone under 18?

Different documents apply. For photo identity we can take a birth certificate, current passport, National Insurance letter, NHS medical card, or a stamped form from a partnership school (partnership pupils only). For proof of address we can take an Education Maintenance Allowance award letter, a letter of introduction from their school signed by the head teacher or deputy, child benefit or child tax credit documentation naming the applicant at their current address, or a parent or guardian's document from List B above. If you are not sure what will work, get in touch and we will talk it through.

Sending your documents

How to get them to us

Almost everything goes through the ID-Pal link we text you. There are two backups for the rare case it does not fit.

The main way
ID-Pal

Open the link we text you and upload both documents there. You can upload a PDF, or a photo of the actual document.

Your photo identity always goes through ID-Pal, it cannot be emailed. ID-Pal takes documents of up to five pages each, which is plenty for ID and most proofs of address.

If a document is too long

Email that one

A bank statement can run past five pages. If your proof of address does, either use a shorter document, or email just that one as a PDF to contactus@capitalcreditunion.com.

Your photo ID still goes through ID-Pal.

If you cannot do either

Come and see us

Bring your two documents to our office and we will do it with you.

31 Dunedin Street,
Edinburgh, EH7 4JG

A photo of you, too

When you send a photo of your photo identity, we also need a selfie of you holding it, so we can be sure the document is yours. The ID-Pal link walks you through both.

No screenshots

A screenshot of an online statement will not pass. Download it as a PDF instead, or take a photo of the paper document itself.

Clear and in full

Get the whole document in the frame, in focus, with all four corners showing. A blurry or cropped photo only slows things down.

Stuck, or not sure a document will work? Ask us before you send anything. It is quicker than a false start.
